Response to:

"There isn't any Truth"

by Gary C. Burger, MDiv

Response: This challenge is self-refuting.

Obviously, this person thinks that he has discovered the truth about truth--that there isn't any truth. Whoever thinks you have to be smart to go to college hasn't heard this challenge! Though the person's thinking only goes one statement deep you can be sure there is a depth of emotion--probably depression. With this statement they are really telling you they don't think their life has any meaning or purpose. They've tried a lot of things, hoping they would provide meaning and purpose and have given up hope.

We might have a conversation like this with them.

Responder: "Oh, is that true?"

Challenger: "Sure, its true."

Responder: "You are saying it is true that there isn't any truth. So you admit that something is true. But why go on denying there is truth? I've discovered that a lot of people who claim there isn't any Truth do so because they don't think their life has any meaning or purpose. Is that the case with you?"

Challenger: “Yeah, I guess.”

Responder: "May I share more about how Jesus Christ has given my life meaning and purpose?"

Conclusion

Depression can lower the IQ of even the smartest college student or professor.
